The best fish and chips shop in the UK named – does your local make the top 10

Fish and chips is one thing Brits are known for, with thousands of shops up and down the country serving up the popular cuisine.

And now The National Fish and Chip Awards has revealed the top rated takeaway in the whole of the UK – but did your local make the top ten?

After secret taste tests were carried out across the UK, the National Federation of Fish Fryers (NFFF) chose the winners from its final list of ten takeaways and five restaurants.

Ship Deck in Caerphilly, Wales, took the crown today at a glitzy award ceremony in London. Ryan Hughes, who runs the takeaway with his partner Kimberley, opened the shop four years ago.

Mr Hughes also won Young Fish Frier of the Year in 2019. He described his wife as the “bread and butter” of the business.

Ship Deck has been praised by customers for its “excellent service and exceptionally good food” as well as “plentiful” portion sizes.

Regular cod costs £6.90, with chips costing £2.45.

Speaking about the event, awards organiser and President of the National Federation of Fish Friers Andrew Crook says: The National Fish and Chip Awards 2024 has been a remarkable experience to be part of. Our winners and finalists have put their all into making their fish and chip businesses stand-out for all the right reasons.

“It’s no secret that the sector has been hit hard by economic hardship, yet we have seen first-hand how chippies up and down the country, and overseas, are thinking fast on their feet to defy the odds without compromising on ethical standpoints, quality and most importantly, great tasting fish and chips.”

He added: “We are bursting with pride for our winners and other contenders. It’s a privilege to be able to support and encourage them further and they should all be proud of what they’ve achieved. Fish and chip teams rarely have a moment to pause but we hope everyone takes some time to enjoy the celebrations ahead of getting back to what they do best.”

Yarm Road Fish and Chips in Darlington, County Durham, took second place. Meanwhile, The Fish Works in Largs, Scotland, took third place.
