IPL 2024: English players’ unavailability for playoffs not certain | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: It is not certain if England’s white-ball players, who are set to feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA & West Indies in June, will not be available for the IPL playoffs, as negotiations are on between the BCCI and the ECB to secure their availability at a crucial time of the league, TOI has learnt.
A few days back, the England team’s managing director Rob Key had revealed that their white-ball captain Jos Buttler had pushed for withdrawal of English players from the Indian Premier League play-offs ahead of the T20 World Cup.The IPL play-offs are scheduled to be held from May 21 – May 26, clashing directly with England’s four-match T20I series against Pakistan.
However, Butler’s decision has not gone down well with the franchises, who are peeved as before the IPL auction on December 19 last year, the English Cricket Board had confirmed the availability of their players for the entire duration of the tournament. “The franchises are in no mood to release their England players at this stage of the tournament, as they had planned accordingly at the auction. Talks are on between the BCCI and the ECB to resolve this issue,” a source tracking developments told TOI.
” Yes, the BCCI has taken it up (with the ECB). I hope the ECB keep their commitment they made before the auction. This type of adhoc withdrawal of players will come with consequences,” another well-placed source told this paper.
CT forces clash between PSL, IPL
For the first time ever, the dates of the cash-rich Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League are clashing with each other next year due to Pakistan hosting the Champions Trophy in February, the traditional window of the PSL. With dates of both the T20 leagues being held at the same time, many overseas players will be forced to make a choice to play in one league and skip the other.
“Due to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 being held in the traditional event window, the event window for the 2025 event will be 7 April-20 May. The four playoffs are proposed to be staged at a neutral venue,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement on Saturday. The IPL, which started on March 22 and will end on May 26, too is held during the months of April and May every year. The PSL was held from February 17 to March 18 this year.
