Herd Women’s Basketball Hosts SEC’s Florida Gators Saturday – Marshall University Athletics

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – For the first time since the 2004-05 season, Marshall’s women’s basketball team will host an SEC opponent when the Florida Gators come to Huntington. Tip from the Cam Henderson Center will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be purchased HERE.

  • On March 27, 2023, the Coach Kim Caldwell era began for the Marshall University women’s basketball program. Caldwell became the eighth head coach in the history of the Herd. 
  • Caldwell – the Parkersburg, West Virginia native – joins Marshall from Division II Glenville State, where she turned the Pioneers into a powerhouse, going 191-24 in seven seasons, winning the 2022 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship. 


  • Marshall is playing just its second home game of the season Saturday, with its only home game being a 121-55 win over Point Park last month.
  • The Herd is forcing 23.7 turnovers per game, which is 10th nationally.
  • Marshall fans will see shots go up from deep. The Herd is shooting 31.7 three point attempts per game, a number which is fourth nationally.
  • Marshall and Florida have never met in a regular season game. Kentucky was the last SEC team to visit the Cam Henderson Center for a women’s basketball game.

  • The Florida Gators are 6-1 with its lone loss being a four-point defeat to #12 Florida State. UF will have four games remaining following Saturday’s contest before opening SEC play at home against South Carolina.
  • The Gators have an abundance of scorers, with three players averaging more than 12 points per game. Aliyah Matharu leads that trio with 18.6 PPG and a team-leading 13 three-pointers.
  • The team is led by Kelly Rae Finley, who is in her second full season in Gainesville. Last year she led the Gators to a 19-15 record with a WNIT Quarterfinals appearance.
